Atracurium (Tracrium)

Mechanism of action

Non-depolarising neuromuscular blocker (intermediate acting).

Blocks neuromuscular transmission by competitive inhibition of nicotinic acetylcholine receptors on the motor end-plate. 

Indications and dose

Pharmacokinetics

Onset of action: 2–3 min

Duration of action: 15–35 min.

Half-life of elimination: 20 min

Metabolism: Hofmann elimination, non-specific plasma esterases

Elimination: liver, kidney

Directions for administration

Administer intravenously

Solution for injection/Infusion (10 mg/ml)

1 vial = 2.5 ml (25 mg) / 5 ml (50 mg) / 25 ml (250 mg)

Transient hypotension

Rash

Bronchospasm

Reversal

Rapid reversal of atracurium is achieved by anticholinesterase agents.
