Pipecuronium (Arduan)

Mechanism of action

Non-depolarising neuromuscular blocker (long acting).

Blocks neuromuscular transmission by competitive inhibition of nicotinic acetylcholine receptors on the motor end-plate. 

Indications and dose

Pharmacokinetics

Onset of action: 2.5–3 min

Duration of action: 60–90min

Half-life of elimination: 1.7–2.3 hr

Metabolism: Hepatic

Elimination: Kidneys (80 %), liver (20 %)

Directions for administration

Administer intravenously

Medicinal forms

Solution for injection (2 mg/ml)

1 vial = 2 ml (4 mg)

Side-effects

Cardiac: transient hypotension, bradycardia, reduced cardiac output.

Malignant hyperthermia

Reversal

Rapid reversal of pipecuronium is achieved by anticholinesterase agents.
