Rivaroxaban

Mechanism of action

Anticoagulant (factor Xa inhibitor).

Inhibits activation of platelets and formation of fibrin clot by direct and reversible inhibition of factor Xa.

Precautions

Must be taken with food.

Consider dose reduction in case of co-administration of dronedarone, chinidin, fungostatics or ritonavir.

Consult guidelines and literature about safety, suspending and restarting anticoagulants when performing invasive procedures.

Do not withhold anticoagulation solely due to risk of falls.

Bioavailability: 66-100% (increased with food)

Metabolism: Hepatic

Half-life of elimination: 5-9 hours (11-13 hours in elderly)
